Common Causes of Motorcycle Accidents

While many people unfairly stereotype motorcyclists as reckless, data from the Oklahoma Department of Public Safety often tells a different story. Frequently, it is the negligence of passenger vehicle drivers that leads to a collision.

  • Left-Turn Collisions: The single most common cause of motorcycle accidents — a driver turns left at an intersection, failing to see an oncoming motorcycle or misjudging its speed, striking the rider head-on.
  • "Inattentional Blindness": Many drivers are mentally "tuned" to look for large objects like cars and trucks, and may look directly at a motorcycle yet fail to process its presence until it's too late.
  • Distracted Driving: With the rise of smartphone use on OKC roads, distracted drivers often drift into lanes or fail to brake for motorcycles stopped at traffic lights.
  • Road Hazards: What might be a minor nuisance for a car — loose gravel, a pothole on the Northwest Expressway, an uneven expansion joint — can be deadly for a two-wheeled vehicle.
  • Dooring: In busy areas like Midtown or the Plaza District, a parked driver may open their door into the path of an oncoming rider.

Oklahoma Motorcycle Laws

Navigating the legal aftermath of a crash requires a firm understanding of the statutes that govern riding in the Sooner State.

  • Helmet Requirements. Under 47 O.S. § 12-609, only riders and passengers under 18 must wear a helmet — though not wearing one can still be used to argue comparative negligence.
  • Eye Protection. Without a sufficient windshield, riders are legally required to wear goggles, a face shield, or other protective eyewear.
  • Lane Splitting. Unlike some states, lane splitting is illegal in Oklahoma and can complicate your personal injury claim.
  • Handlebar Height. As of 2025, handlebars generally cannot be higher than the operator's eye level.
  • Statute of Limitations. You generally have two years from the date of the accident to file a personal injury lawsuit in Oklahoma.
Myth

Insurance adjusters assume motorcyclists are reckless, so my case starts at a disadvantage.

Fact

Rider bias is real, but it's not evidence. Data from the Oklahoma Department of Public Safety shows negligent drivers — not riders — cause most motorcycle collisions, including left-turn accidents where a driver simply doesn't see the bike.

Where Do Motorcycle Crashes Occur in OKC?

Oklahoma City's sprawling layout and heavy highway traffic create several "hot spots" for riders. Our attorneys frequently handle cases stemming from:

I-40 & I-44 Interchange

A high-speed merging zone with frequent, treacherous lane changes.

Northwest Expressway

High turning traffic into shopping centers — one of the most dangerous stretches for left-turn accidents.

Broadway Extension (US-77)

Commuter traffic and high speeds often lead to rear-end collisions.

I-235/I-44 Interchange

A complex four-level interchange still prone to frequent merging accidents.
