When we say we’re a community-first law firm, we mean more than showing up for events or putting our name on a sign. We mean making sure people see themselves in the legal system, feel safe asking questions, and believe that justice includes them too.
That’s what our Community Involvement video is all about. In just a few minutes, it shows why representation matters, how a familiar face can change someone’s comfort level with the law, and what it means for kids to see a Black attorney in action.
“Representation absolutely matters”
One line in the video captures the heart of our message: “Being community first is also understanding that representation absolutely matters.” We feel that every day in our work at JJ Law.
When people from minority communities walk into a law office and see an attorney who looks like them, it changes the energy in the room. In the video, we talk about how, if you are a person of color, you may “immediately feel as though they're going to be a little bit more approachable, or at least a little bit more understanding of your circumstance.”
That’s not about image. It’s about trust. It’s about walking into a space that often feels cold or intimidating and instead feeling seen and understood.
The friendly face you call with “any” legal question
One of our favorite moments in the video is when we talk about the calls we receive that have nothing to do with personal injury or wills and estates. People still pick up the phone and reach out with other legal questions because they know they can talk to us without feeling judged.
As we share in the video, community members call because they feel like, “that's a friendly face, or that's an individual that looks like me, that might understand where I'm coming from when I ask this question.” That feeling matters. It breaks down the idea that there are “stupid questions.”
When neighbors feel comfortable enough to ask, they get the information they need to make better choices. That aligns with what drives us at JJ Law: we want people to feel informed, empowered, and involved in every step of their legal journey.
More than lawyers: role models in the neighborhood
Being community-first also means understanding the power of example. In the video, we talk about how we’re “in a position where we can influence our neighbors by being not just a resource, but being something that they can aspire to be, that their children can aspire to be.”
When kids see a Black attorney working in their community, they don’t just see a suit and a briefcase. They see a real person who came from a neighborhood like theirs and built a career in the law. As we say in the video, “Oftentimes when you see something in practice or something in action, you start to believe that you can be that something as well.”
That’s a big part of why we stay visible and involved. Our work doesn’t end when a case closes. We want to show the next generation what’s possible, whether they grow up to be attorneys, teachers, business owners, or anything else they dream about.
Believing that justice is for you too
The video closes on a line that means a lot to us: “From a legal standpoint, when you see a black attorney and you are a black man or woman or child, you start to believe that justice is for you also.”
